Winners of the 2020 Joshua Nkomo chess tournament dominated the 2020 Heroes Chess Open tournament.

Project Chess Zimbabwe together with their sponsors Crystal Candy hosted the annual Heroes Chess Open virtual via lichess. Close to 90 players participated in the online tournament in four categories namely Elite section, open section, ladies section and U-14 section.

Tournament kicked off on 7 August and ended yesterday with Roy Mwadzura, Cyril Chigodo, Tawanda Zambuko, Gift Sithole and Vitalis Mapuranga sharing a RTGS$6100 in the elite section. Roy Mwadzura who finished 3 in the Joshua Nkomo Memorial Chess tournament amused 76 points and was crowned as the winner in the elite section walking away with $1600.

Champion of the Joshua Nkomo Memorial Chess tournament Cyril Chigodo finished 2nd with 70points with Zambuko, Sithole and Mapuranga finishing 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.

The open section had RTGS$5900 up for grabs for the top 10 winners. Craig Mandimutsira was crowned as the winner in this section and pocketed RTGS1300 whilst Prosper Mateveke and Jemitias Hamandishe  settled for position 2 and 3

Linda Shaba who recently won the ladies open section in the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Memorial Chess tournament continued her dominance after she was crowned as the winner in the ladies section pocketing RTGS$1000.

Kudzanai Charinda who finished 3rd in the ladies section of the Joshua Nkomo Memorial Chess tournament finished 2nd with 77 points one point away from Shaba who had 78 points.

Nokulunga Ndlovu dominated in the under 14 category winning the category after scoring 79 points, Bongani Tshuma  and Carol Ndlovu finished 2rd and 3rd respectively. Consolation prizes were also available with Tinashe Mwashita winning the most dedicated player whilst Knowledge Ndlovu won the best Madala player.

Project Chess Zimbabwe national coordinator Clive Mphambela attributed the tournament success to chess players and administrators commitment to excellence and sportsmanship. He also thank Crystal Candy Zimbabwe who have been faithful sponsors to Zimbabwe Chess for the past four years.

Players like Linda Shaba,Kudzanai Charinda, Roy Mwadzura, Cyril Chigodo and Vitalis Mapuranga used the 2020 Heroes Chess open to prepare for the 1st World Online Olympiad which is currently underway. Zimbabwe who are in the top division will kick start their campaign in the online Olympiad on the 21st of August.

Zimbabwe Chess Federation played a major part in the tournament assisting with technical expertise.
