South Africa, Australia and Germany bids for a chance to host the prestigious 2023 ITTF World Table Tennis Championship finals in 2023 were accepted by the International Table Tennis Federation.
Zimbabwe table tennis has pledged to help the South African table tennis board in their bid to host the world championship in Durban. The president of ZTTU Mr Ferenando who is the vice president of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Table Tennis vice president is leading a movement to have South Africa host the championship.
Technical director of ZTTU Nelson Madzokere believes that if South Africa host the tournament Zimbabwe will be able to send a full compliment of both ladies, men’s and para table tennis teams. It is also an opportunity for our national umpires to get a chance to participate at world stage.
The World Championship has never been held in the Southern Region of Africa, and when countries were told to bid for the hosting of the games only one African country which is South Africa successfully submitted their bid.
Because of our bilateral relationship with South Africa Table Tennis Board it is only prudent that we support our own, better still have a championship closer to home. This will also boost our tourism industry said Madzokere.
When it comes to preparing for the championship ZTTU will be invitating high level coaches to assist our local coaching teams in a series of High Performance Camps to improve our athletes level of play.
The 2023 ITTF World Table Tennis Championship finals will be the third edition under the revolutionary, expanded format to ensure maximum participation of ITTF member national association.
