It would be nice to have people recognize what Linda Shaba does for Zimbabwe chess. Ever since online chess was introduced an enthusiastic Linda has utilized the opportunity and played several competitive games.

Nigeria was scheduled to host the 2021 edition of the Africa Individual Chess Championship from the 25th to 29th of January but the championship was postponed indefinitely due to the traveling restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This then forced the organizes to host the tournament online via the Tornelo platform thus becoming the maiden online edition of the continental championship.

Zimbabwe had four representatives taking part in the virtual tournament. And 23-year-old Linda Shaba who finished 5th in the Women’s Blitz Individual at the African games in 2019 impressed.

Shaba who is the 4th highest ranked female chess player in the country gunned 6½/9 points and finished fourth in the Africa Online Individual Chess Championship.

Linda finished fourth recording five wins, three draws, and one defeat, thanks to the previous row of three consecutive victories.

WGM Mezioud Amina from Algeria was the only one who managed to defeat Shaba in the 7th round. Shaba later went on and defeated Algerian Khadidja Latreche in the 9th round to seal off a top performance that saw her finishing 4th and walking away with USD 500.

Speaking to our publication Linda Shaba was impressed with her performance. ” I started preparing for this tournament when I saw the invitation a month ago. I used to play some rapid games with Tapiwa Gora and would also solve puzzles online. I am glad that my preparation paid off.” – said a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Shaba.

She also thanked Farirai Gumbe for sponsoring her with the US$60 registration fee.
