Former Zimbabwe Jockey Academy student O’Meara Rusike who was offered a place at South Africa Jockey Academy a year and some months ago continue to settle well after she swooped two awards at the just-ended South Africa Jockey Academy Awards.
The most prestigious jockey academy in the continent South Africa Jockey Academy held their small and intimate Prize Giving last week Friday. This was to celebrate and acknowledge their apprentice’s amazing achievements last year.
23-year old O’meara Rusike walked away with the “Are You Happy Boy” trophy named after Mr. Ben Jonsson’s famous question that he would ask each Apprentice on his numerous and regular visit to the Academy.
And for her dedication, discipline, enthusiasm, hard work, humbleness, impeccable manners, respect, passion, and willingness to learn the third year Apprentice jockey walked away with the floating trophy.
Despite sustaining a concussion after falling off a horse at the track last year Rusike worked diligently at her recovery and returned to training in August. And immediately signed racing paper.
This contributed to her being awarded another award for Apprentice who has shown the most athletic improvements throughout the year.
Owner of the Equestrian Performance Kylie Bonthrone who has worked with Rusike and some other Apprentices Jockeys was delighted with Rusike success. Posting on her Facebook account Bonthrone said
When I started working with the apprentices I couldn’t have believed they would get so far this makes me more proud than any other award could!! O’Meara Rusike well-done girl!! I’m so proud!
Just last year one of Kylie’s student Apprentice Rodgers Satombo was named Apprentice Jockey of the Year at Borrowdale Park.
