Just six weeks after setting a standard marathon (42.2km) personal best of 2:28:40 in Italy to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, 33-year-old Irvette Van Zyl smashed Great Britain’s Alyson Dixon IAU World 50km record.

Van Zyl has transformed from pace-setter to World Record holder.

The South African ran a time of 3:04:23 (three hours, 4 minutes, and twenty-three seconds) at the Nedbank Runified Breaking Barriers event in Gqeberha. Smashing the previous world record set by Great Britain’s, Alyson Dixon in 2019 of 3:07:20.
