The fourth edition of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Regional Annual Sport Awards (RASA) 2019 took place tonight in Windhoek, Namibia at at Safari Court Hotel and Conference Centre.

Awards been celebrated under the theme “Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring Innovation” saw close to 200 invited guests and dignitaries, including ministers of sport from all Region 5 Member Countries and sports celebrities from across the Region coming together to crown the Region sporting champions of the year 2019.

Zimbabwe managed to win three awards with Zimbabwe Cheetah’s coach Gilbert Nyamutsamba winning the coach of the year awards ahead of Samuel Sepeng athletic coach how has coached Caster Semenya. In his acceptance speech Nyamutsamba thanked wife and his two son’s for allowing him to coach and then later went on to thank the sponsors of the Zimbabwe rugby Cheetahs.

Sports journalist Tinashe Tirivavi of the The Mirror newspaper walked away with the sports journalist of the year awards. The camera shy Tirivavi looked surprised and kind of shocked upon been announced as the winner. Tirivavi covers grassroots sports stories from all over the Region.

Wilfred Mashaya the first African to become a Kobudo Champion was awarded the Sportsman of the Year award ahead of Botswana Isaac Makwala and South Africa swimmer Chad Le Clos. The Kobudo Champion thanked the Zimbabwe Republic Police for believing in him and always sponsoring him to compete in international tournament.
