Zimbabwe women’s tennis team finished 15th in the Billie Jean King Cup Euro/Africa Group III after being beaten by Kosovo 2-1 during the 14th-15th Play-off tie in Vilnius, Lithuania on Saturday.
In a match that lasted for almost 47 minutes, Zimbabwean Tadiwanashe Mauchi lost the opening singles rubber against Bashota Donika 6-1, 6-1 to put Kosovo ahead with a 1-0.
The second singles match was very competitive. Tanyaradzwa Midzi faced Lekaj Adrijana and once again the Zimbabwean lost 6-2, 6-3. Mauchi and Midzi showcased their class and skill in a stunning victory.
The Zimbabwean pair fought hard to overcome Kosovo.
Broqi and Gjinaj proved to be too strong for the Zimbabwean pair in the first set thumbing them by 6-4. However, the courageous Midzi and Mauchi knocked Kosovo 6-1 before they ended the set 3-2.
The Tennis Zimbabwe team was captained by Faith Mawisire and included Tanyaradzwa Midzi, Tadiwanashe Mauchi, and Valeria Bhunu. Zimbabwe was placed in Pool E together with Malta, Algeria, and Kenya.
Only managing to win one game against Kenya and finishing third in Pool E. In the first play-offs, Zimbabwe thumbed Rwanda 3-0, and wonder girl Valeria Bhunu was in form overcame her opponent Umulisa Joselyn 6-2, 6-0.
The youthful Zimbabwe ladies tennis team finished 15th out of 21 and showed us that they were bold and courageous. The Billie Jean King Cup European/Africa group III was hosted by Lithuania. And host Lithuania and Norway were promoted to Group II next year.
